The Piano School of New York City
PSNYC teachers are highly qualified music degree professionals who instruct students in small, age-appropriate groups. Class maximum is 6 students (3 for PK). Lessons are 45 minutes (30 minutes for PK), are given on two or three days per week and are offered in 10-week cycles throughout the school year. The Spring Recitals take place at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The goal of the program is to instill curiosity and love for music, and set a strong foundation for future individual music lessons. Children are encouraged to learn basic Music & Piano Skills: introduction to piano, listening, singing, clapping, note reading & writing, music theory and appreciation, history, piano/keyboard skills, and much more.
Studio in a School
All elementary students receive art instruction through a program taught by Studio in a School. Studio in a School provides the children with the invaluable experience and guidance of a professional artist, high quality art materials, in-depth creative experience and the joy of making art. The program focuses on visual art including drawings, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture and two-dimensional applied design. Lessons are reinforced through demonstration, discussion, group reflection and exhibitions of student art. Art is also integrated within the regular curriculum of the early grades. The fifth grade art curriculum includes special programs and participation in city-wide competitions in which the school has excelled. Portfolio preparation, exploration of different media, and art history are stressed in grades six through eight. The art materials are supplied with the help of the Sarah Mandel and Bea Rodgers Art Funds and donations from the P.A.
Movement and Dance
Generous grants obtained by the Parents’ Association allow us to have Movement Classes for all our students in grades K-6. The P.S./I.S. 187 Dance and Movement Program provides students with a stimulating and creative program, with classes at each grade tailored to specific concepts and tasks. The internationally-acclaimed, Washington Heights based Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company is in residence at the school two full days per week to teach the classes. The 5th grade is working with the American Ballet Theater to provide cultural experience and ballet education to students.
Family Yoga Night

Students and Parents Practice Yoga
Opera Program
Our fifth graders take part in the NYC Opera Program, “Opera is Elementary” (sponsored by the Parents’ Association), in which they learn about the world of opera and eventually produce an opera performance of their own. The school also partners with the American Ballet Theatre to provide free tickets to students and parents throughout the year. The Intermediate School children who qualify in art or technology may participate in the Eyebeam Art outreach program after school in Soho.
Kindergarten Garden Program
The Bennett Park Children’s Garden program is a partnership between P.S./I.S. 187, Kindergarten parents, the Friends of Bennett Park, NYC Parks Dept., NYC Partnership for Parks, and the Washington Heights Neighborhood Association. In the Spring, for ten weeks, Kindergarten children visit the park weekly to plant flowers, watch and observe how plants grow and discover why plants, worms, and bugs are important. They also learn to appreciate our local park and develop a sense of ownership of the park.
Yearbook
Every year an eighth grade student club produces a yearbook for the eighth graders. The editorial staff is composed of a faculty advisor and a group of eighth graders who serve as writers, editors, photographers and illustrators.
Service Learning
This wonderful P.S./I.S. 187 program promotes community service and enables children to realize how assisting others can add to their personal growth. Twice a week older children tutor, play chess with, or provide homework help to younger children. A major component of service learning is Peer Tutoring. Under the direction of a teacher, eighth graders help younger children after school with homework or in academic subject areas. These Intermediate School students receive service credits for their participation in the program.
Mighty Milers
The Mighty Milers running program was launched in the elementary school in the spring of 2007. Participating classes walk or run together 2-3 times per week, during gym or when they need a break, to achieve a fitness goal of 1/2 mile per week. A "running track" was measured off in the play yard and in the gym. As the program continues, incentive prizes are awarded as the classes increase their total mileage run. The Mighty Milers is a running program designed for NYC Public Schools by the New York Road Runners Foundation.
New York Junior Tennis League
This outdoor program offers free tennis instruction, practice and play three times a week to all NYC boys and girls 6-18 years old. Trained coaches provide a comprehensive schedule of instruction, practice and play for all levels. Players develop their skills, make new friends, and learn the rules and sportsmanship of the game of tennis. Loaner racquets and balls are provided for use. The program has been offered in the spring since 2006 and has been utilizing P.S. 187’s blacktop tennis courts. Funded by the Arthur Ashe Foundation.
Bent On Learning Yoga Program
Since the fall of 2007, yoga classes have been offered to the school through Bent On Learning’s Adopt-a-School Program. A continuation of these classes has been made possible through fundraising and donations. In a supportive, non-competitive environment, the children will improve their physical fitness, cognitive, social and emotional skills through instruction in yoga and relaxation. Bent on Learning is a not-for-profit organization in NYC that brings yoga to NYC Public Schools.
