Children who attend P.S./I.S. 187 come from the northwest corner of Washington Heights. This area, just south of Fort Tryon Park and a few blocks north of the George Washington Bridge, is home to a neighborhood that has nurtured generations of different immigrant populations. Ours is a community in which diverse cultures converge on scenic, historical streets.

The school was erected in 1929 as an elementary school, grades K-6. In 1973 the school added two grades, becoming an intermediate school and elementary school in one building, under the authority of one principal. The school’s programs draw, as a resource, on the dynamic cultural institutions that surround it, such as the famous Cloisters branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yeshiva University, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, and the gardens of Fort Tryon Park.
