Joining and Participating in the P.S./I.S. 187 Parent Teacher Association
Mission:
The Parent Teacher Association facilitates funding and support to strengthen the PS187 curriculum & learning environment.
Goals:
- Support interactive relationship between parents, school admin and teachers
- Promote an effective learning environment for students
- Provide opportunity to participate in school & educational decision-making.
What does the PTA do?
We hold multiple fund-raising events each year and dues drives
Funds have historically gone to support “wish lists”
How do I participate?
Any parent of a student attending P.S./I.S. 187 is welcome to participate in the Association’s General Meetings and Committees. Parents can sign up for a committee at a general meeting, or contact the Parent Teacher’ Association by leaving a message on the PTA voicemail #212-465-7517

This email group was created to facilitate communication with the PTA and to help parents stay informed. To subscribe, send an email, including your child’s full name, grade and class number, to: ps187pa-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Once subscribed, you can also access the eGroup via its web page.
Contacting the PTA
The PTA can be contacted via voicemail at 212.465.7517 or by leaving a note in the PTA mailbox in the school’s Main Office. You can contact individual PTA board members from the contact page.
General Meetings
Monthly meetings are held typically on the 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm. (Dates differ in November, December, March and June. Refer to the calendar for a full list of dates.) They provide information about what’s happening at the school and in the PTA, and they provide a forum for parents to meet other 187 parents and to raise concerns.

School Leadership Team
Mission
To determine school’s overall educational vision, goals and priorities.
This includes identifying strategies to achieve above & alignment of resources required.
Goals
- Creation of school’s Comprehensive Educ Plan (CEP), annual goals/objectives
- Development of school budget, within guidelines of DOE and CEP.

Friendsof187.org
Mission:
To work with PS187PA, the School Leadership Team and Washington Heights
neighborhood to fund academic, artistic and social enhancements at PS 187.
How is Friends different than the PTA?
- Provides direct, tax-deductible donations
- Bring in alumni, neighborhood residents, friends & family of current students.
- Fund high cost, large scale, whole programs via funds rolled over yearly.
What does Friends do?
They hold two major fund-raising events each year;
- Winter Gala – January/February
- Spring Appeal – May
