Joining and Participating in the P.S./I.S. 187 Parents’ Association
Any parent of a student attending P.S./I.S. 187 is welcome to participate in the Association’s General Meetings and Committees. Parents can sign up for a committee at a general meeting, or contact the Parents’ Association through their mailbox in the Main Office of the school.

Contacting the PA
The PA can be contacted via voicemail at 212.465.7517 or by leaving a note in the PA mailbox in the school’s Main Office. Individual PA board members can also be contacted via email at the addresses listed below.
General Meetings
Monthly meetings are held typically on the 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm. (Dates differ in November, December, March and June. Refer to the calendar for a full list of dates.) They provide information about what’s happening at the school and in the PA, and they provide a forum for parents to meet other 187 parents and to raise concerns.

Fundraising

Select and manage all fundraising events, which provide the income to run our enrichment programs and purchase materials that enhance the academic curriculum of our school.
Grant-writing subcommittee
Ruth Lilienstein-Gatton, chair (ruthal@vzavenue.net)
Seek out and apply for grants that fund programs or purchase materials to enhance various aspects of school life. Work in conjunction with teachers and administrators to target academic and other areas of need. The committee welcomes parental efforts to expand the school’s horizons by raising grant monies.
Hospitality

Do you like throwing parties and serving food? Then the Hospitality Committee is for you: provide refreshments for the many PA programs and orientations, and plan large-scale events including the Staff Appreciation Dinner and the Spaghetti Dinner.
Community Liaison

Reach out to prospective & incoming parents through tours and nursery school presentations. Conduct outreach to local businesses and work within the PS/IS187 school community to increase communication and information about the PA.
Cultural Affairs subcommittee
Position is TBD.
Promote and enhance understanding, unity and appreciation of the existing and growing diversity in our school and community by organizing music, dance, poetry events and workshops. Honor and suppport racial and ethnic differences with respect and openness.
Environmental

Address concerns about the school’s physical condition, including: the gardens, the schoolyard and pathways, neighborhood construction, and traffic congestion.

Fitness & Nutrition

Work on the general health of our students. Since 2005, it has helped bring movement programs into the school: monthly Family Yoga Nights, Mighty Milers Running Program and Bent on Learning Adopt-a-School Yoga Program. Working with the School Nutritional Partnership, the school now has a steamer for the kitchen and a salad bar in the cafeteria.

The Class Parent Representatives facilitate communication between the parents and the teacher. The CPRs create a class list for classroom distribution only, and provide support to the teacher regarding chaperones for a field trip or help in the classroom by reaching out to the other parents for assistance.
